| 21/06/2010 16:10:37 | Richard Gray | Regards D.Richardson’s sighting: I’m not saying it wasn’t a female Golden Oriole but a Green Woodpecker in flight is very similar and has scent my heart racing on a few occasions in Belfairs N.R on a sunny May morning – did you see it land? Excellent reports of breeding at Two Tree Island - Black-headed gulls and Common terns. |
| 20/06/2010 11:07:36 | D Richardson | I was in Southend Cemetery a week or so back and spotted a very different bird, only caught a couple of quick glimpses. My daughters have bought me a bird book for fathers day and I believe it was a female Golden Oriole! I am no expert but am sure, can anyone tell me if they have seen it there! |
| 12/05/2010 10:46:42 | Richard Gray | Don Petrie’s observation of a Phylloscopus sp. with appearance of a Willow Warbler briefly calling like a Chiffchaff is most interesting. I have witness the opposite - a Chiffchaff briefly singing like a Willow Warbler but not the other way round. There is definitely more to the inter-relationship of these two species than meets the eye. |
| 25/04/2010 22:25:59 | Martin Smith | 6 Dotterel seen in flight, heading south from north of the Crouch, Burnham Wick Farm, in the direction of Wallasea at 8.00am, 25/04/2010, they didn't land on my pea field! |
| 24/04/2010 17:21:05 | Peter Carson | I write to you because there is an immediate threat to Bird life on the Southend mudflats which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and home to an internationally important wildfowl population. The amusement venue called Adventure Island on Western Esplanade has applied for unconditional use of high power Xenon light beam projectors which will be used to project light beams many miles into the night sky over the bird feeding and breeding area of the Thames Estuary.I am a resident of the Eastwood Leigh on sea and confirm that the current limited use of these sky beam lights causes a major degradation of the night sky from my home which is at a distant of over 3 miles from the Southend seafront source. Unconditional use of the powerful lights will cause distress to the birdlife on the mudflats therefore the application must be rejected. The planning application number is 10/00566/ADV and access to the application details and on line response portal can be found at the Southend Council website for Public access or you could respond in a letter. The history so far is that during 2006 / 2007 Adventure Island were using four 4000 watt xenon sky tracker sky beams to advertise their venue without planning permission. Retrospective advertising consent was granted in January 2008 but with condition 4 restricting their period of operation to Friday and Saturday between 6 pm to 10 pm. During 2008 Adventure Island lodged a further application to have the condition 4 relaxed. However the application was withdrawn because the Planning Officer recommended refusal on the grounds that a survey be carried out to establish the effect on the protected bird population of the Southend and Benfleet marshes over which the lights project. Adventure Island have now produced a survey and claim no detrimental effect on the bird population so have applied for complete relaxation of all conditions contained in the original planning consent. I live at a distance of 3.5 miles from Southend seafront and the sky beams can clearly be seen projecting overhead spoiling the night sky in a major way. The intensity of these beams is so powerful as to make them visible at a distance approaching 7 miles. It would be disastrous for the night sky and the bird population of the area if the current restrictions were lifted or relaxed. The SE region RSPB conservation Officer will be objecting to the application and I urge you to add to the protest by sending Southend Council planning department a letter of objection. My concerns are based on the degradation to the night sky because of my astronomical interests but I also have major concerns that the report produced by the applicant claiming no effect on birdlife is very misleading. I have attached a copy my draft response to the planning application which may assist you in compiling your response. It also contains the address details etc if you respond via letter. I would be very grateful if you could spread this email to anyone who may be concerned enough to make representations to Southend Council. The final date by which representations must be made is 7th May 2010. The contact at Southend Planning department is Sophie Glendinning Tel 01702 215004 x 5727. |
| 15/04/2010 23:17:04 | DC | Hi, does anyone know of a good area to see or hopefully hear a Nightingale. The only one i have heard was some years ago on Danbury Common. Thanks in advance. |
| 02/04/2010 20:20:27 | DC | Saw the Kestrel again today opposite Altons even though it was wet. |
| 22/03/2010 18:57:17 | David Selley | Re Mike Bailey's sightings at Wakering Stairs today. I left at about 17.30 - sadly I did not see the Short-Eared Owl which was the purpose of my brief visit. Worse still I did see the Renault being removed on a low loader at 16.30 !! ( Also a flock of 160 Sanderling at Haven Pt. - not seen them away from the seafront before, presumably leaving). |
| 09/03/2010 18:12:12 | DC | I was sitting in my car in Altons garden centre car park in Basildon and was watching a Kestral hunting. It was working along the trees and hedges on opposite side of A127. It was there for about 15 minutes. Great view. |
| 07/03/2010 16:40:54 | Jenny Brown | I think I saw the same female Sparrowhawk as seen later on Highlands Boulevard in my garden in Leigh at about 9:45 this morning (Sunday 7th) - performing a spectacular kill of a collared dove in my garden! |
| 26/02/2010 16:22:40 | D C | I saw my first Siskin today at Wat Tyler country park on a bird feeder. It was verified by a RSPB member. Great stuff. |
| 09/01/2010 17:04:06 | les marsh | 10 to 20 red wings eating berries in garden rayleigh road eastwood |
| 12/12/2009 22:33:30 | LESMARAH | On the 11th December 2009 one heron on taxiway AT Southend Airport. on the 12th December 2009 Kingfisher on Rochford golf course |
| 19/11/2009 13:49:16 | John Troup | I've just started work on the 8th Floor of the Civic Centre in Victoria Avenue and just witnessed a peregrine flying past the window with an unidentified victim in its talons! Big deal you'll probably say (I see you have pics of peregrine victims in the Victoria Avenue area on your site) but it was a real treat for me and a peregrine first in more than 35 years of keen but not particularly committed birding! |
| 24/05/2009 09:41:48 | Steve Atkins | Correction to yesterday's post. The Nightingale was heard singing to the north of the grid point. Apologies for any confusion. |
| 23/05/2009 19:44:38 | Steve Atkins | Wednesday 13th May 2009 My first visit to Benfleet Creek since 2004. I used to regularly bird watch the area in the 1970s and was very surprised to hear a Nightingale singing from Benfleet Downs. I was by the borrowdyke at TQ788856 and the bird was more or less due south of this point. A Hobby was sitting in a field between the seawall and the railway line. It was still in the same place about an hour later. Another species I never used to see in the area in the 1970's along with 50 Avocets on Two Tree Island and two Little Egrets in the creek. Steve |
| 11/05/2009 16:29:19 | Sarah | ADVICE NEEDED! Collared Dove nested in very dangerous area of garden and has 2 eggs, the nest must be removed, what do I do with the 2 eggs? Please advise, Thank you x |
| 08/03/2009 20:03:11 | R Clark | Hi there, It was just an enquiry as to Woodcock sightings at Hadleigh Downs, particularly by Andrew Woodhouse. I have never seen one locally and wondered if there was any particular area in the park that may be worth searching as it is such a large area. i know it is a hard bird but any help would be appreciated |
| 28/01/2009 11:28:36 | Pat Williams | Cool site. |
| 26/01/2009 13:19:08 | Len Britton | On saturday 24 January at Garons Park Golf course I spotted three unusual looking ducks.I was quite close to them but did not have a camera. On reaching home I identified it as possibly being a red crested pochard is this loikely and if so did anyone see these birds? |
| 24/07/2008 01:26:24 | Russell Clark | I found a Black Stork circling over St Andrews Road, Shoebury at 7.30pm. I am 100% of ID and have seen them in the past a few times abroad. It was circling quite low above houses then drifted NE towards Eagle Way area.It may be worth searching the area in the morning as it was quite late and I would presume that the bird would put down somewhere for the night, unfortunately I will be at work! The direction it was heading suggests Wakering area / Fleet head / Wallasea may be worth a try first thing. Regards |
| 05/04/2008 22:01:24 | Noel Barnes | At Hinkling Broad Norfolk on Fri - 4/4/08. | 28/02/2008 10:53:15 | John Bruty | I would like to make contact with Steve Arlow because I saw that he is using the same camera as me, the Coolpix P5000 with his spotting scope with very good results. I am using the camera with a Nikon ED50 scope and wide angle lens but I struggle to get sharp images. I am using the recommended settings. Any chance you could give me some tips or the settings you use Steve? Your help or anybody elses would be most appreciated. Telephone contact is 0208 532 7032 Thanks |

| 31/01/2008 11:48:44 | Alan Hobson | Reports from a visitor for Tuesday, 29 Jan birding in your area: Westcliff: The Ring-billed Gull, showing very well, 1.20 - 1.40 pm, plus Med Gull, Curlews, Little Egrets, Oystercatchers, Turnstones. Paglesham Lagoon: Long-tailed Duck, Scaup, Barn Owl (exciting views of it flying right by me in the fields near the lagoon on my way back to the car), Pintail, Shelduck, Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwall, Pochard, Little Grebes. I am grateful to the recent report from one of your members which alerted me to the potential for the Lagoon. |
| 17/12/2007 11:38:28 | Alan Hobson | I thought you might be interested that I saw the Ring-billed Gull on Sat 15th Dec, on foreshore near Rossi's, between 12.35 and 12.50 pm. I know you don't allow visitors' reports onto the daily news (only members). However, thought you might want to know for your monthly summaries - esp. as you have noted yourselves several times this year that the gull is more elusive this year than in past years. Also saw Med Gull, 70 Sanderlings, 32 Brent Geese and 12 Turnstones. |

| 24/11/2007 13:50:26 | Rookie | We are new to bird watching. We saw a bird peek out from a clump of Lavender and rosemary. According to the RSPB bird recognition site it is a Water Rail. We live in Thorpe Bay and try to have a wildlife friendly garden so we are thrilled. The only issue is that the beak seemed to be curved and not straight. Are there any other possibilities? The beak was definitely long, like a sandpiper and the head was smooth and grey, it was smaller than a pigeon and bigger than a thrush, it had a longish neck. In the clump of bushes there are a high number of snails that the thrushes eat in the summer. |
| 30/10/2007 22:59:07 | AD HESSELS | when visiting Southend I took a phot of Gull AEYE (ring white on green) How can I add a photo (when interestend..) |

| 20/07/2007 03:35:41 | ajay shekdar | I am looking to connect with my my birdwatching friend Ian Douch from Southend on sea. Please have him e-mail me at aj_shekdar@yahoo.com. I have not been in touch for over 10 years now. cheers. |
| 27/05/2007 20:47:02 | Nic Young | Anyone please know the whereabouts or email address of John Knott, of Southend-on-Sea, or village nearby? A long lost friend who I would dearly like to contact and stay in touch with..... |
| 15/02/2007 17:54:56 | Simon Hughes | It is plain for all see that many many years of birding experiences have played a major part in making this a brilliant site!!!! Ive always had a big interest in birds and worked as a volunteer on a conservation project with macaws in Costa Rica. I feel it is time i paid more interest in the huge array of species in our area. If possible would it be possible if i could come out with any of you sometime. Names like Steve Arlow and Paul Baker keep cropping up on the RSPB Southend website so i presume they are the local birding 'faces'to be out with!!! I know there must be many more as experienced also. It suprises me how many local rarities have been recorded over the years. If you need any references to vouch for who i am then please ask. Keep up the great work. Many Thanks Simon Hughes (Southend) |
| 07/01/2007 21:25:19 | Richard Leighton | The photos of the Purple Sandpiper are superb. From the records it shows just how good a sea watch at the end of the pier can be. Best wishes. |
| 25/12/2006 10:52:40 | PACIFICIST | MERRY FESTIVAL EVERYBODY. HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY A HAPPY, PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS 2007 AND YOU ARE WITH YOUR LOVED ONES AT PRESENT. HERE'S HOPING FOR AN EXCITING AND ENJOYABLE 2007 BIRDING YEAR. BEST WISHES FROM PACIFICIST. |
| 12/12/2006 17:13:35 | Pacifist Better to live a single day as a tiger!! Than a thousand days as a sheep. I fear you are a sheep!!!! | |
| 10/12/2006 23:15:12 | Pacificist | Mr Concerned why the anger? It does neither you nor your cause any good. In perspective does it really matter SOG does not allow you to join them? They would never allow me either, but does not matter to me. Should not matter to you. Life is full of exclusions some greater than others - I would never be allowed to join the All England Tennis Club, or the Henley Regatta, or Cowes. It matters to me not a jot! Come on forget this matter. It is not important. The anger you carry inside you will do you more harm than any exclusion from a local birding group. Genuinely with Best Wishes. |
| 08/12/2006 22:36:41 | Mr Concerned | Commonality implies brotherhood and mutual repsect, not elitism and exclusion. PS saw a starling in my garden, but since not a member of SOG (Sad Old Gits), you do not believe me!!!!! Defercation happens. |
| 04/12/2006 09:36:58 | Pacificist | I would like to thank SOG for letting non members access to their records. I can see both sides in the debate. SOG needs to be sure the records carry weight, and any non member can send in observations either here or any of the other birding sites. The main thing surely is that we all accept our eccentricities, we all have a commonality - that is we are bird watchers. Let us devote our engergies to birding and conservation - rather than fighting amongst ourselves. |
| 09/11/2006 17:58:24 | Mr Concerned | Chill out!!! Perhaps you can accept the elistist and descriminatory world in which we live. Hey you probably believe in the "War on Terror" because the Sun told you so!!!! Me I do not. This is because I have a brain and am capable of free independant thought. I thus seek to promote the interests of birds by inclusion, rather than exclude. |
| 27/10/2006 15:02:17 | Chinchilla | Mr. Concerned, don't get so het up. I'm not a member of SOG although I know a couple and they're perfectly pleasant and very personable. Have you contacted SOG yet? Who knows, in time you might be invited to join. I'm not a member because my interest in birds is not sufficient althogh I enjoy looking at the site nevertheless. So calm down my friend, chill out, be happy :) |
| 20/09/2006 17:10:47 | Mr Concerned | My error 7 months. |
| 20/09/2006 16:59:49 | Mr Concerned | 6 months since last comment. Why? May be you need some more members. |
| 20/09/2006 16:57:31 | Mr Concerned | Rather too elitist one feels. Invited to join??? Do you have any funny hand shakes and do you wear you trousers half way up your leg???? Do not surpose I will ever be invited to join you. I will have to learn to live with this. Mr Concerned Bird Watcher |
| 23/02/2006 08:13:19 | Joan Bannister | Many years ago there used to be an owl seen and heard in the area near Chalkwell Park, several nights recenly I have heard an owl again Has any one else in this are? |
| 18/02/2006 22:58:16 | Ailsa | Visited Abberton Reservoir today, Colchester but couldnt wait to get back to Southend and our stunning waders! First contact with this site and found it really helpful as new to 'watching' and now know the difference between a Curlew and a Whimbrel (I think!!) |
| 21/12/2005 21:59:46 | Neil Morris | Great catalogue of gull shots. |
| 01/06/2005 21:49:21 | james fiddes | could you please send me details of your group |
| 26/05/2005 15:28:02 | Jill Ellis & Joan Honour | We really enjoy looking at your website. Our factory is situated on Purdeys Way Industrial Estate. Often we walk to the River Roach, near the MFI store. We have sighted a Kingfisher on 2 seperate occasions darting east along the river. It is a great shame that the river here is in such an awful condition with rubbish etc. everywhere. The council should be ashamed. It could be a really pretty spot. Earlier in the year, I saw a green woodpecker in the small reservoir area in Rochford, on the ground feeding for at least 1 hour. Keep up the good work! Jill and Joan |
| 30/04/2005 16:17:41 | David Heath | On April 28th, I saw a large bird standing & resting in the middle distance in shallow water of the lagoon at Two Tree Island. It was rather larger than an egret, with a similar outline, predominantly white with a black cap, black cheeks and breast and a very mottled back of what appeared at a distance to be chestnut brown and black. I could not make out the shape of the bill/beak./ I have not been able to find any bird resembling it and wonder if it was an immature form. The pictures of immature heron do not look anything like the bird I describe. I would be interested to have comments from the experts. |
| 30/01/2005 17:24:30 | SARAH EVANS | Hi I hope you dont mind me e mailing you. I have just bought a beach apartment in Costa de la luz and the location is fantastic for bird watching. i was woundering if it would be possible to have a link on your website to mine? The province is one of the Spanish provinces with a larger number of protected natural hectares, which may give you an idea of the natural delights to be found here. Some of the beaches you can find on our coast, featuring pine tree forests that come so close to the sea that they seem to be whispering to it, are used as a shelter for many different species, both animal and plant: worth mention are the chameleons (protected by law as an endangered species), tortoises, flamingos, various ducks, and plants such as broom (in which you can sometimes find chameleons), rock roses with magnificent white flowers and the popular rosebays that embellish our fields with their green colour. Moving onto the sea, we must point out the wealth of the fauna, where species such as octopus, cuttlefish, sea bass and sole stand out and add great flavour to the Huelva gastronomy. Our area’s proximity to the Doñana National Park is also worth mentioning. The park is set up as one of the essential mainstays of the Huelva ecosystem, considered to be one of the most important nature reserves on the old continent and home to an immense variety of both plant and animal species. You can visit the park having booked in advance. There is also the Sierra de Aracena Natural Park, in which the wealth of plants and above all fungi make a visit mandatory, especially in Autumn Thanks for your time. | 02/01/2005 20:55:05 | Graham Saunders | My Wife and I were walking tonight (02/01/05)along Southend Seafront between 'Peter Pans' and 'Westcliff Leisure Centre'. We saw two groups of small birds on the waters edge scurrying around frantically. As it was dark it was difficult to make out colours, however it looked liked they were white breasted. Each group had around 30 birds approx. We just wondered what they may have been... Snow Bunting maybe, however they looked smaller. |
| 23/12/2004 16:42:40 | David Bays | How do you join the SOG? |

| 29/02/2004 00:07:07 | Rayleigh Horticultural Society | Just surfed in looking around at interesting things in the local area. Your site is very interesting with lots of information. I spend lots of time in the garden, and have seen a bird of prey a couple of times, and also herons, and a woodpecker. http://www.geocities.com/rayleighhorticulturalsociety/ |

| 12/03/2003 20:03:34 | Mike Sagrott | Good to see another well thought out and useful website in this area. Anyone interested in carrying out a Sparrowhawk survey in, say, the area between Foulness and Wat Tyler? If enough people,on a given date and times, with mobiles, phoning in sightings as they happen to a central co-ordinator..............? Could be applied to Kestrels as well? Or perhaps its been done many times before, if so what happened ?? Just a thought. |
| 24/02/2003 08:02:38 | Martin Powell | A very handy web site to all birdwatchers in the Southend area.I have been bird watching for many years now and live 2 minutes away from the seafront by the kurssal. The waders in autumn and winter month are a very welcome sight. If i can be off any help to you,Please email me. Many thanks Martin |
| 25/01/2003 14:46:43 | Christine James | thank you for a very informative site. Having recently moved into Rayleigh it was very helpful to find some interesting areas. |
| 03/01/2003 17:47:44 | richard howard | Good to come back & see some old faces just before Christmas, and some birds I haven't seen for 15 years, such as Dunnock, Bullfinch & Goldcrest! Keep up the good work with the web-site - it's very well done (when you can get in to see it) & keeps the interest in the area going. |
| 24/11/2002 18:31:15 | Jeff Elliott | I have a Nikon Coolpix 995 and Kowa Scope TSN2 with X30 eyepiece, Nikon Remote and sunshade, What settings do I use to get good results? |
| 05/11/2002 19:43:32 | ivan batchelor | excellent site very informative. Please say hi to Simon as I have not seen him for years since I moved from Basildon to Benfleet. |
| 29/10/2002 19:51:11 | Brian of Southend | I was surfing the Southend RSPB site and saw a link to your site so here I am. What I want to know is, which one of you is the Judean People's Front and which one is the People's Front of Judea? I represent the Judean Popular Front and am in the process of setting up my own site where only I can submit records. If you ask me really nicely I might let you submit some too! |
| 06/10/2002 22:42:03 | Dudley Shaylor | Today 6th October I have been unable to enter any visit data (SOG error questioning valid species names) Of interest I had a very brief view of a possible peregrine from the west end of Two Tree Island, it put up a flock of curlew over on the castle side of the creek but I only saw it for a second. Also I saw about 20 greenshank and 14 avocets on the lagoon (1315 - 1430) Please could you change the spelling of my surname, it should be Shayler. Thanks Dudley |
| 31/08/2002 21:26:45 | Nick Ransdale | Excellent website - well conceived, professional,by far the best in Essex, and arguably even better than KOS; well done! Pity non-SOG birders can't view the 'silly' photos! Two thoughts... Could you shove more data into the otherwise brilliant records section - it doesn't go back very far. Have other [major] websites got YOU in their LINKS? If so I've probably missed it. Regards, Nick Ransdale, Witham. |
| 26/08/2002 21:45:12 | Dave Carter | Very interested to hear of terek sandpiper at Maldon - where exactly has it been seen? |

| 04/08/2002 11:53:20 | Mildred Schofield | Enjoyed your site which I visited to find out if Avocets have bred this year. Two past years I have seen very many including a female incubating eggs from the hide by the lagoon - walking from Leigh Station/carpark along the coast. Don't know the name. Surprised to have no mention of Avocets in this location. Any news would be welcome as I can't always get away from London to look for myself? |
